Lifetime Limitations in Multi-Service Battery Energy Storage Systems

A reliable power grid system based on renewable energy sources is a crucial step to restrict the climate crisis. Stationary battery storage systems (BESS) offer great potential repel fluctuations in at different timescales. However, for operation and cost estimation, degradation batteries needs be understood. We present an accelerated study, single as well multi-service applications, of NCM532/Gr lithium-ion cells. Frequency regulation (FR) was least harmful battery, with expected lifetime 12 years, while peak shaving (PS) resulted 8 years. The combined cycle (FRPS) capacity loss, positive electrode induced from start cycling, causing limitations after only 870 equivalent full cycles (EFC). Tracking 1C-rate discharge proven good indication cell polarization, it can serve useful method evaluate internal state health (SOH).
